How to Hire a General Contractor

Are you planning a kitchen remodeling project? Or maybe you’re in the market for a room addition or bathroom remodel? From small- to large-scale home improvement projects, you want to be sure you hire a general contractor you can trust to get the job done. Hearn Construction, Inc. gives Indiana residents the following tips on hiring a general contractor.

1. Gather references.

Most home improvement blogs and experts will tell you to start here. Ask friends, family, co-workers, social-media groups, or fellow club members to recommend a general contractor for your home improvement project. Be sure to ask them plenty of questions about their experience, and pay attention if several people recommend the same general contractor. From these references, create a list of general contractors you want to research further.

2. Do some sleuthing.

No need to be sneaky here, but please do investigate a potential general contractor before you sign any contracts. You can narrow down your list of general-contractor options by checking into their customer reviews, credentials, years in business, membership in professional organizations, and pictures of past work.

3. Call the general contractor.

With one phone call, you can get a feel for the contractor’s level of customer service and professionalism. If you feel comfortable with the information you’ve gathered and with your interaction over the phone, go ahead and request a meeting to discuss your project.

4. Interview and gather quotes.

We recommend that you meet two or three general contractors so you can compare customer service, communication skills, quotes, and plans for your home improvement project. This in-person consultation is important for you in moving forward. You want to choose a general contractor with whom you feel comfortable.

5. Compare.

After you have all the information, lay out all quotes and maybe your personal notes. Think about your goals for your home improvement project, and pay attention to which general contractor can help you get there. If needed, do a bit more research, or go see past work in person. Compare every detail, and if one rises to the top and you’re ready to move forward, do it.
