4 Questions to Ask Your General Contractor

You’re ready to dive head first into home improvement. However, before you hire a general contractor for your project, you want to make sure you have done your research. 1. What are your credentials?

Make sure the general contractor is licensed and insured for residential home remodeling in your state. While you can find plenty of good handymen out there, you want to make sure your property improvements are done up to code and with high standards. So check the contractor’s credentials!

2. What type of remodeling experience do you have?

Some general contractors may have a broad range of remodeling experience. But for your home, you may want someone who has specific experience with the space you want to remodel, such as the bathroom, kitchen, or basement.

3. Does your estimate include all possible costs?

Home improvement companies each have their own system for billing clients. Read the general contractor’s quote carefully. One thing you may want to pay special attention to is how the company charges for labor. Some general contractors may charge a flat fee for home improvement services, while others may charge hourly (or some combination of the two). Make sure you understand the fine print.

4. What is your projected timeline?

If you’re in a time crunch to get your remodeling completed, be sure to ask how much time the general contractor needs to finish the project. Granted, unexpected things often pop up during construction, but you want to have a general idea of what to expect.

Be sure to ask these—and any other questions you might have—before hiring a general contractor for your home improvement project. You want to feel comfortable with who is in your home and the quality of work you can expect. So, by all means, ask your questions!
