Preparation Steps

1. Many bathroom remodeling projects involve getting down on your hands and knees, and this one is no different. The first step is removing the carpet from the tack strips around the perimeter of the room. If you have a large bathroom, cut the carpet into smaller pieces for easier removal.
2. Next, pull up the carpet pad and remove the tack strips (use a small pry bar or screwdriver to lift them out).
3. Clean the floor with a scraper and install a layer of ¼” plywood on top of the subfloor.
4. Fill in the seams with a leveling compound, let it dry and then sand it smooth. This will be the base for your vinyl tile.

1. Luckily for the less crafty homeowners, laying vinyl tile is easy. Draw a chalk line across the middle of the room (from front to back and side to side). The intersection will serve as a guide and a starting point.
2. Peel the backing off a tile square and press it down firmly on the floor. When you get near the walls and other obstacles, you’ll have to cut them to fit with a utility knife. Or, rent a vinyl tile cutter for cleaner edges.
3. Go over the floor with a roller to set it firm, then stand back and admire your handiwork.
